Beneath The Roses

photography: Gregory Crewdson

When I first saw this photograph I suppose the scale must have been the first thing that grabbed my attention. It then quickly developed into a slight sense of unease whilst studying the picture. Almost like when you're watching a horror film, continuously nervous that any cut to the next scene might alarm you with something unpleasant. When I locked eyes with the small female figure to the left of the picture I had that "horror movie" feeling. Something wasn't quite right and I couldn't work out what. Like the plot hadn't been given away just yet but you just knew it was all going to unravel. I've never experienced that kind of emotion with a photograph before. I was amazed that a still image could evoke such a strong sense of fear. my eyes desperately searched the photograph for more answers, more clues. But it's story that leaves you to decide and those are often the best.
