Lens Based Media

On the second day of Lens based media we were separated into groups and had to all draw characters or people that we found interesting, both of people we did and didn't know, on a piece of A2 paper. This was then followed by drawing places that we like, disliked, wanted to visit and didn't want to visit.

As the we all sprawled images over the page, trying to fit even more on as our tutor demanded more illustrations the A2 sheet gradually became a confusing montage of people and places. 'draw somewhere you wouldn't want to do' was demonstrated through an illustration of a smelly shoe done by my fellow group member. With New York, fun fairs and a theater stage being amongst the places of desire. Once we had completed all of the drawings we were then asked to create stories from our illustrations. Choosing a character, a place, a dilemma, (preferably a ticking clock element to evoke suspense) and a conclusion. This was then followed by doing a story board of our three individual stories.

Being separated into smaller groups of class mates I hadn't properly met yet was actually a really nice element of this project. We all came into the task from completely different points of view and all had something completely different to add to the illustrations and stories. The concept of starting with a pencil, piece of paper and a few illustration to create and develop a story was one I had never encountered before. I found the technique really helpful, clever and one I will definitely use again because having a narrative is something that's used in most elements of design be it fashion, film, photography etc.
